National Genomics Infrastructure (NGI)

National Genomics Infrastructure (NGI) is one of the largest platforms at SciLifeLab and offers next generation sequencing (NGS) and genotyping through a comprehensive range of technology platforms to all academic researchers in Sweden.

The SNP&SEQ Technology Platform is one of three facilities that make up the NGI collaboration. The three facilities are; NGI Stockholm, NGI Uppsala (the SNP&SEQ Technology Platform), and NGI Uppsala (Uppsala Genome Center). Together NGI provides access to wide range of technologies for next generation DNA sequencing and genotyping, and associated bioinformatics support.

NGI was launched 2013 and follows the VR RFI guidelines for national infrastructures. NGI is supported by the Swedish Research Council (VR), host universities (Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University, and Uppsala University), and SciLifeLab. In addition, the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW) has provided critical support for new instruments and computational infrastructure.

The platform is hosted by Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab), a Swedish national center for molecular biosciences with focus on health and environmental research. NGI is one of SciLifeLabs largest technical infrastructure both in terms of number of projects and users.

NGI aims to provide internationally competitive genomic infrastructure to enable academic researchers in Sweden to perform world-class research projects through:

  • A well-equipped infrastructure with a comprehensive range of the latest genotyping and sequencing technologies, accessible to all academic researchers in Sweden on equal terms.
  • A flexible infrastructure with the ability to perform technology development for customization of projects and implementation of new developments in the production-scale genomics services.
  • A learning environment where researchers can become familiar with cutting-edge methods in genomics through scientific meetings, user workshops and training courses.
  • By supporting national networking of Swedish universities and core facilities in the field of NGS.
